More about Teleplay Therapy.
What is Tele-therapy?
Tele-therapy or teleplay therapy refers to forms of therapy conducted virtually. Teleplay therapy is unique in that it is done completely virtually. The traditional play therapy has been adapted to an online platform that allows kids to still play out various challenges that they may be facing as well as help them find ways to cope with these challenges. Teleplay therapy makes use of online games and activities as well as various other activities that help connect the therapist and the child and further allow the child the opportunity to develop skills to help them cope with emotional challenges.
How is it different to traditional play therapy?
Teleplay therapy is different to traditional play therapy as it is done completely online. This changes the therapy slightly allowing for various challenges that come with having an online session as opposed to traditional face to face therapy. Such challenges could include distractions in the home, network and connectivity challenges. Parents and therapists will need to work together to tackle these challenges.
How does it work?
Once it is decided that therapy would be the most suitable intervention for your child, we will arrange an online meet and greet session to introduce your child to the process. Therapy sessions will then take place on a weekly or biweekly basis, hopefully on the same day and time to keep the structure for your child. Sessions can be done via the zoom, skype or Whatsapp platform.
What are some of the benefits?
Online therapy sessions are beneficial in the mist of the global COVID-19 pandemic in that it allows you and your family the opportunity to receive psychological support in the safety of your own home. The pandemic had resulted in the closing of schools, some businesses and many other challenges. The emotional and psychological effects of the virus are also rife and many are struggling with anxiety, depression, adjustment difficulties etc. Children may be particularly vulnerable to the psychological effects of the virus and the consequences thereof. Adjusting to the ‘new normal’ and managing anxiety during this period could also prove challenging for many.
How to make an appointment?
The first step is to contact me via email or telephone. We will then setup an intake session where the parents/caregivers and myself will meet virtually to discuss the challenges that the child may be struggling with and what would be the best way to assist the child. If it is decided that therapy would help the child, we will setup a session with the child via zoom, skype or WhatsApp video call.
