Career Assessment

What is a career assessment?

The career assessment process involves a series of objective psychological tests that look mainly at a person’s aptitude, personality, career interests and values. These assessments enable clients to explore their academic potential, personality and interests in order to facilitate a promising and fulfilling career journey. During this process, clients will participate in an intake and feedback session as well as a computerized career assessment battery. The main goal of a career assessment is to help the client understand themselves and the world of careers better in order for them to make informed career decisions.

How will it help me?

Individuals will likely face many career decisions in their lifetime, the career assessment process will help people to understand themselves better in relation to careers. This will allow them to make more informed and intentional career decisions. Although this can affect us during different stages of our lives, learners about to exit the schooling system struggle with this in particular. Choosing a course of study/career that fits your career interests, values and aptitudes is one of the most important career-related decisions that any learner will make in their career journey. This process, therefore, aims to assist clients in the exploration of realistic study options that will enable them to plan their long-term career progression. Bonus, the career assessment process will consider every aspect of your career journey such as funding options (if you need to study further), where you could build up work experience (internships, vac work, work integrated learning) etc.

When should I consider a career assessment?

When you struggling to understand yourself, your interests and talents/strengths. This makes it difficult to choose a suitable study or career path. A career assessment will help you to understand yourself better and point you in the right direction in terms of what careers or study paths might be a good fit, the onus is still on you to do the necessary research on the careers of interest and to ultimately decide on the best option for you.

Different types/ reasons for a career assessment

A career assessment is most helpful to people in the following positions or stages of life:

·      Grade 11/12 learners in the process of exploring post-school options.

·      University students considering their study/career options.

·      Adults considering mid-career changes.

What is involved in the process?

The career assessment process will consist of an intake interview, for me to get to know you a bit better and understand your needs and expectations. This session will take about 50-60 minutes. You will then need to complete a series of online assessments that will look at your aptitude (what you are naturally good at or struggle in) your personality as well as your career interests and values. This will take about 2-3 hours depending on your pace. The feedback session will take place after this and will be a chance for you to receive and understand the results of your assessment and explore options going forward. A comprehensive report is also included with recommendations and resources for you to refer back to.
